End of an era

Not with a bang, but with a whimper - and largely a yawn from the media - the Syrian troops have pulled out of Lebanon. It took a bitter civil war to get them there 29 years ago, it took Bush Sr.'s tacit acquiescence in exchange for Syria's support in the first Gulf War to entrench them there, and it took one misfired assassination followed by unyielding pressure from Bush Jr. to get them out. But for that fateful conjunction of a fatal miscalculation by Hariri's enemies and the specter of freedom haunting the Middle East (no apologies to Karl Marx), the UN Resolution 1559 would have remained just as effective as the most of the previous 1558 resolutions.
